Last semester I invited the US Copyright Office to visit my class but they canceled at the last minute citing fear of exposure to "student questions."

This semester I managed to arrange a field trip to visit them but now they're shut down.

I might have to switch my curriculum from "how DC works" to "how DC doesn't work."

Anyone got ideas for alternate field trips?

If you still have an account on academia.edu, you should probably delete it.

I'm not sure how their new terms are legal: they give the site the right to use your data *in any manner*. This is mainly to help them scrape academic work and republish/mangle parts of it through AI without credit: but these terms go way beyond that into your likeness, your voice, even your signature.

Please boost this to academics you know. Further PSA elements in thread:

Are completely arbitrary minimum page / word count criteria still a thing in school and academia?

As a person that likes to get to the point quickly, I always fell short of these artificial requirements and yet it never affected my grades, because I said everything there is to say.

In times of LLMs, I do wonder how many students feel pressured to reach for ChatGPT just because their natural way of writing does not conform to excessive prose expectations.

In fields where I am an expert (and have the degrees or CV to prove it), I'd never insist that people trust what I say just because of that.

Take it more seriously? Listen more closely? Follow up more diligently? Of course.

But if I have nothing to back up my statements other than "I'm an expert and you're not," then honestly, I have nothing to back up my statements. You're right to be skeptical.

My old introduction was very outdated, so it's time to reintroduce myself:

Hi 👋, I’m Laura.

I am a transfeminine person, somewhat in the middle of my transition. 🏳️‍⚧️ #trans #transbubble

A major part of my time I spend as a Postdoc in computer science, working on embedded AI and low-power IoT communication. #cs #TinyML #IoT #academia #science

Outside of work, I am active in the local #queer center (board member, GER: Vorstand), I enjoy playing board games, and I listen to too many #podcasts.

What could be the next great school of thought. A commingling of:

- ecology
- Space and Place
- Behavioral Studies

I would even say such a commingling would supersede what has been my primary preoccupation, Violence Studies. The above could rise above that and lead the way.

It would be the new ontology. It would not even require Marx inspired sociology.

Update. "Over 150 US university presidents sign letter decrying #Trump administration"
theguardian.com/us-news/2025/a

"More than 150 presidents of US colleges and universities have signed a statement denouncing the Trump administration’s “unprecedented government overreach and political interference” with higher education – the strongest sign yet that US educational institutions are forming a unified front against the government’s extraordinary attack on their independence. The statement, published early on Tuesday by the American Association of Colleges and Universities, comes weeks into the administration’s mounting campaign against higher education, and hours after Harvard University became the first school to sue the government over threats to its funding."

The letter itself:

EDIT. As of April 24, 2025, the tally of signatures is up to 425.

Update. "Faculty From 14 Universities Join Forces to Call on Administrative Bodies to Stand Up to Attacks on Higher Education"
docs.google.com/document/d/1hF

"Faculty from fourteen universities across the United States signed and released letters calling for their respective university’s administrative bodies to stand up to the Trump administration’s attacks on academic freedom, freedom of inquiry, and other democratic principles. Nearly 5,100 faculty have collectively signed these letters on what the American Association of University Professors has called a Day of Action for Higher Ed. This is a collaborative effort independently organized by passionate faculty across four universities… Following the extraordinary sign of leadership from Harvard University on April 14, 2025, these faculty are speaking out to encourage their own institutions to stand up and fight back collectively against the illegal and unprecedented actions of the federal government."
